Birthdays – Calgary, Badlands, and the Rockies

[simage=3733,200,n,left,]We had friends from Vancouver, Copenhagen, Ireland, and Scotland visit us in sunny, hot, and pollen-filled Calgary for Andy’s 40th birthday.

Thanks so much to everyone for coming – it’s was a lot of fun and a lot Pimm’s, wine, beer, and pie!

The Badlands trip was great.  Spectacular landscape, which was too hot to explore while we were there.  The dinosaur displays at the Tyrell are superb – loved the digital microscopes showing specimens in Amber and the display of amazing original fossils.  A single day in the Royal Tyrell Museum is not enough.

We waved goodbye to several friends and hit the road to Banff and Jasper with the survivors.  Fantastic weather continued as we enjoyed the Icefields Parkway and a stop at the Athabasca Glacier.  In Jasper we celebrated Gill’s birthday with a good dinner and craft beers at Jasper Brewing.  This was well earned as we did an 11 km trail run beforehand with the pace kept brisk to avoid the mosquitos!

The final survivor of the week was Sarah Mitchell, who stayed on for a night of camping at Lake Louise and two great shoulder season hikes – the Plain of Six Glaciers, and Lake Bourgeau.  The weather took a turn for the worse, and our hiking included rain, hail, snow, and glorious sunshine. Planning now starts for Gill’s 40th!
