Last week Andy had a week’s work in Laos so thought I’d take advantage of a seat sale on Thai Air to join him. What’s not to like about lovely Vientiane, with its lack of macet (traffic jams), great food and drinks and relaxing atmosphere?
So, with Andy in the Mekong River Commission office all week, I didn’t do much other than enjoy some coffee-shop-working and spend some time in the MRC library with my trusty laptop. Really I am here for the food. Great Lao food like laap (salad of fresh herbs and meat/fish/tofu), sticky rice, morning glory (aka kangkung or water spinach) and spicy papaya salad washed down with Beer Lao on the banks of the Mekong river. If only Beer Bintang was so good! Great European food like chevre, Camembert, baguette (French stick as we say in the UK!), pizzas with real cheese and plentiful wine.
The highlight is always Makphet restaurant, another vocational training charity for youth, which has amazing contemporary Lao food and imaginative cocktails (Hibiscus daquiri anyone?). And all for a good cause.
In between the eating, I managed to walked round and do a little shopping, as well as taking a few pictures of the sights. Enjoy!
