Sunny, big, expensive, not as warm as you might think – welcome to Australia. Our road trip began in Melbourne on Christmas Day and ended in Sydney on January 12 in time to see Sons and Daughters play in the Sydney Festival. News Years Eve in Broken Hill and more than 5000 kilometers travelled.
Great Ocean walk is a great backpacking route along a beautiful stretch of Victoria coastline – 100 km from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. Officially, the east to west route is 7 nights, but we had planned to shave one day off this because otherwise some of the days are very short. Perhaps Aussies are not as sporty as they claim – it would have been easy to cut one more day off the hike.
In October, we received the final set of visitors from Canada. Bjoern, Britta, Tabea and Andrew were keen to meet our orange cousins in Borneo, so off we, plus our Bogor friends Karen and Michael, went for a 4 day 3 night boat trip to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan.
We can’t recommend Timur and Rote enough as a holiday destination. Off the well worn tourist trail, but easy and full of great people. Our trip included Kupang (with its night market), climbing Fatu Timau and Mutis, and relaxing on Rote Island – world class surfing at the southernmost point of Indonesia.
