[simage=2670,200,n,left,]All too soon the first long weekend after our move back to Canada came around, and we weren’t really organized for a weekend away, after several months of running around like headless chickens sorting out every detail of our “nearly-new” life.
Luckily, Vancouver Hash House Harriers came to our rescue, and we were tempted into making the drive north from Vancouver to the village of Lund. The journey involved two ferries, and taking the road to its end before Desolation Sound. We set of on the lunchtime of Good Friday, and seemed to spend most of the day sitting in the line up for the ferries. THe drive was beautiful however, and we arrived to find the faithful hounds of VanHHH holding a table at the local restaurant for us, having preordered our fish and chips so we didn’t go hungry. After a couple of refreshing beverages we made our way to the campsite, to find that Cat and Aaron had bagged us a relatively un-boggy pitch. We put up the tent and retired to the bonfire for a few more drinks, to keep us warm in the chill of the spring nights a few hundred km further north than Vancouver.
The next morning we explored the village of Lund, which turned our to have a lovely small harbour and a historic hotel, plus a fantastic bakery that would put Vancouver’s eating places to shame, as well as a shop selling very warm and beautiful sweaters. The campsite is run by a couple of Hashers and was a great spot with good facilities just 50m from the harbour, bakery and restaurant. Lund has a much better vibe than Tofino. After lunch it was time for the Hash, which was a fun run through the forests and trails and ended in an easter egg hunt at the beer check. After the circle back at the campsite, the food starting coming out, no mean feat for the 50+ hashers who had turned up from Vancouver, Victoria and further afield. Then it was back to the campfire as the night fell and the temperature dropped.
The next morning we decided to get up and get going for the earlier ferry so we had time to see the Skookumchuck Narrows, which is one of the world’s largest tidal rapids (apparently, although we are not sure what the competition is!). It turned out to be pretty impression as the water poured out from the inlet in rapids and whirlpools. After that we headed along the Sunshine Coast to Gibsons for another fish and chip dinner at the pub that was in the Beachcombers, which all Canadians but no Brits know about…
All in all a great weekend getaway to the northern part of the Sunshine Coast: Lund is highly recommended!
