For the first time in 10 years we spent Christmas and New Year in Canada! Our friends Karen and Michael (Bogor now Bremen), Sarah (Vancouver now Limerick), and Bryan (Calgary now Petawawa) came with us to Kelowna for a skiing new year holiday at Big White. Dan from Vancouver completed the magnificent seven skiers.
We successfully navigated the Coquihalla highway pass while it was snowing heavily and made it to Kelowna. We stayed in a great Air BnB about 1 hour drive from Big White.
With most of Canada enjoying a big freeze, Kelowna was a pleasant minus 8 with lots of fresh snow. The snowfall and road conditions put many locals off heading up to Big White and we had superb snow conditions but almost no waits at the lifts. Visibility was not great (it’s called Big Whiteout for a reason). On the second day it was minus 15 at the resort and very windy – so it was minus 25 with windchill! Amazing snow conditions – champagne powder.
Finally on Day 3 and Day 4 it cleared up and we had blue sky days and great views of the Monashee Mountains. We enjoyed our four days of downhill, cross-country, and snow-shoeing.
Happy New Year!
