A great visit to Indonesia – nice to escape Vancouver just as the cold, rainy November weather set in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stayed in Jakarta for the first few nights – arriving in time for a Sunday morning car free day run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Bogor I spent time at the Hatfield office and enjoyed Go Go Veggie for many lunches and dinners and the odd evening at Salak Sunset Cafe. Managed a few early morning runs around the outside of Kebun Raya and at Sempur track. Met up with local running legend Bugi Permana. Hiked in the local Sentul hills at the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the trip, Jim and I headed to Bali to hike up Batukaru – the mountain that nobody seems to know about! We planned the hike from the Jatiluwih trailhead. We stayed at Sang Giri Mountain Tent Resort, which is a nice place with the huge advantage that you start the hike directly from the resort. We hired a guide through the resort and left at 4:30 am thinking it would be 2-3 hours to the summit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trail was a little tougher than we expected – erosion, roots, few fallen trees. Nothing too bad. However, our guide was clearly not fit enough and after 1.5 hours of slow hiking we abandoned the guide. It was about 3.5 hours up and 2 hours down. We had light rain, a few leeches, and several slips. However, it was a great hike – not a single other person on the trail. Nice forest, no trash until (surprisingly) the temple area at the summit. The clouds cleared a little at the summit and we could see the adjacent mountains and the plain below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We collected our guide about 30 mins from the summit after we had already had breakfast at the summit. At the bottom of the trail, locals were visiting the temples for Kuningan. Recommended for strong hikers who want to get off the tourist trail on Bali and have some peace and quiet on a trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After bagging the summit we relaxed at Sangiri resort and the following day did a bit of sightseeing. The Jatiluwih padi fields on the lower slopes of Batukaru were the highlight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
