There was a scorpion in our bedroom this morning – that was quite a surprise and will definitely mean no more going to the bathroom in the night with no lights or shoes on! I also discovered that if you accidentally trap a gecko tail in a cupboard door (they do get everywhere, including in the oven) it comes off very easily and wiggles around by itself for a long, long time. There is also a colony of bats in the mango tree in our garden and we also have a resident toad who likes to sit on our furniture at night.
But all creatures which eat bugs are welcome. We have mozzie proofed our bedroom, and also now have air con and sealed windows in our office. Seeing as the office is now ready, we set the computer up, and I was almost ready to start work until we made a small error with the power supply. The flash of light and smell of burning circuit boards implied we had just ruined our new desktop and widescreen monitor, but it seems that the computing gods were smiling on us and luckily it was just the power supply that was the victim. So that is it: my days of leisure are over and it’s on to working on the stuff I brought from UBC!
Ratna also started to cook for us, and she is a fantastic cook so we have been eating great food this week. She also prepares a fruit platter every day with all the fab tropical fruits you can get here – most of which I have never eaten before and don’t know what they are! It is certainly nice to have someone else buy and deal with the pineapples and mangos.
This week’s goals: to join the Hash on Tuesday – a weekly run around the paddy fields followed by a beer afterwards; and to get internet at the house. Watch this space.
