About

Dean Geomatics is the website home of Andy Dean. I’m a geomatics and environment specialist with a broad range of interests and expertise.

My professional background is geography, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and data and information management. Most of my work is applied in forestry, water resources management, and environmental management and monitoring.

After completing my Ph.D. in the UK in 2003, I moved to Vancouver, Canada. From 2004 to 2008 I was Geomatics Manager at Hatfield Consultants, an environmental consulting company based in North Vancouver. From 2008 to 2011 I was Vice President of PT Hatfield Indonesia, based in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. In January 2012, I returned to Vancouver and became a Partner at Hatfield. In March 2015 I moved to Calgary to become Director of Calgary Operations, and I am very much enjoying having the Canadian Rockies as my backyard.

Outside work, my main interests are hiking and running. During my time in Indonesia, I was lucky enough to climb many amazing volcanoes and mountains – with a friend I created the popular Gunung Bagging website.

This website is a blog related to my hiking and travels in Indonesia, Australia, Canada, and beyond. Most posts are written with my wife Gill.
