Dean Geomatics is the website home of Andy Dean. I’m a remote sensing specialist with a broad range of interests and expertise.
My professional background is geography, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and environmental management. I am experience in applying remote sensing technologies for forest management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental monitoring and assessment.
After completing my Ph.D. in the UK in 2003, I moved to Vancouver, Canada. From 2004 to 2008 I was Geomatics Manager at Hatfield, an environmental consulting company based in North Vancouver. For four years from 2008 to 2011 I was Vice President of Hatfield Indonesia, based in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. In January 2012, I returned to Vancouver and became a Partner at Hatfield. For two years from 2015 to 2017 I moved to Calgary to become Director of Calgary Operations. Returning to Vancouver via Laos I took on the role of Director of Remote Sensing and Geomatics. In 2024 I was thrilled to be appointed as Vice President of Hatfield and I remain based in Vancouver.
Outside work, my main interests are hiking and running. During my time in Indonesia, I was lucky enough to climb many amazing volcanoes and mountains – with a friend I created the popular Gunung Bagging website. Since returning to Canada in 2012, my passion became marathon running and I completed the six World Major Marathons in 2024.
This website is a blog related to hiking and travels in Indonesia, Australia, Canada, and beyond. Most posts are written with my wife Gill.
